Calling all snappers!

The Royal Horticultural Society has teamed up with the Sunday Times to offer a new photo competition, encouraging young and old to get outside and, ‘record how enriching and inspiring gardens and plants can be.” It is free to enter, and there is a prize of £5000 for the overall winner, and a secondary award goes to the winner of each of nine categories.

The categories include:
Welcoming Garden Wildlife
Celebrating Gardens
Pure Plants

A Portfolio category is for six images in a series or based on a single theme or style of photo.

Submit your entries via the RHS Website by 10.00am 1 March 2018. Full details are available on the RHS Website.  How nice would it be if Garthdee Field could feature in some of the winning photos!

Stonking Community Sunday

Our Community Sundays seem to go from strength to strength. Todays was a proper tonic.  It was great to see so many plotters and volunteers join us.  We had so many willing hands we were able to set up three work squads.  As a result, we managed to fill all of the potholes around the site, complete the planting of the 2000 Spring bulbs the Council gifted us, set about a big tidy up of the wood chip pile and the top carpark and collect all the leaves from along the Western perimeter fence. What a magnificent effort!  Many, many thanks are due to all who found the time to attend.

Thanks too, to all who contributed savouries and cakes for the coffee and cake session.  We had a wonderful spread and time for a right good natter.  It was good to catch up and to see new plotters swapping ideas with old lags – sorry hands – and these exchanges can only help set us up for an even more successful growing season ahead.  As always, this will be the last of our Community Sundays for the year: there will not be a December meet.  Watch out for the first of the new season dates, however, and we will hope to see you there.

Our GFAA AGM will be held this Saturday at 11.00 on the RGU Campus.  The short formal AGM will be followed by an informal General Meeting that will include a talk by Bruce Taylor from Plot 79 entitled, “Soil Health and how to Improve it”.  Bruce has just finished a Masters Degree in Soil Science and has recent approaches and practical experiences to share.

We have moved this AGM to this new time on a Saturday to avoid dragging plotters out on cold, wet, dark evenings as before and are hoping for a big turnout.

Diary date for seed lovers

This message arrived from Lizzy Shepherd of Gone to Seed.  I know many plotters visited and enjoyed the Tarland event last year.

I hope you are busy saving seed to share with your friends and to bring along to the 2018 Seed Swap and Potato Day being held in Tarland on Saturday 24th February.
So far I have saved carrot, mangetout, cutting celery and flat leaf parsley seed; hopefully, the leek seed will have time to fully ripen…not sure yet. The photo shows how attractive the carrot and leek seed heads look, it’s worth growing them just for that!
If you would like to get hold of some of the seed envelopes now, please drop me a line and I will try and see if we can get them to you. They will be available in a few locations early next year as well, or just bring your seed along on the day and put them into envelopes there.
In the meantime, there are some really useful clips below on how to go about saving seed and isolation techniques etc:
I hope that you find these useful. We will be running another seed saving workshop at the seed swap and potato day in 2018, so why not come along to that session and learn more.
