Super Troopers!

It takes a lot more than the odd wintry shower to put off our Tuesday Volunteer Squad.  They got well stuck in today removing the whin bushes on the North Bank by the car park.  Thanks to Gordon, Anne and Mike.

Amazing Kiwi Fruits on Plot 23

Thanks go to Val on Plot 23 for this story.

Perhaps I ought to start by saying this is not an April Fool’s Day story. :-)

This is Val’s recent harvest of Kiwi Fruits grown on her plot outside against her south-facing wall.

She says the fruits are small but perfectly formed and have made a delicious jam rich in and vitamin C.

And there was me thinking I had done quite well with my Blueberries!  I am not sure what this tells us. Are Kiwi Fruits hardier than we might have imagined? Is this more evidence that our local climate is indeed changing? Maybe, of course, it’s just a matter of excellent gardening! In any case, congratulations go to Val for a stunning result.

Has anyone else something a bit exotic to share?

Order online, by post or by phone – but remember to quote the GFAA code!

Stonking Community Sunday

Our Community Sundays seem to go from strength to strength. Todays was a proper tonic.  It was great to see so many plotters and volunteers join us.  We had so many willing hands we were able to set up three work squads.  As a result, we managed to fill all of the potholes around the site, complete the planting of the 2000 Spring bulbs the Council gifted us, set about a big tidy up of the wood chip pile and the top carpark and collect all the leaves from along the Western perimeter fence. What a magnificent effort!  Many, many thanks are due to all who found the time to attend.

Thanks too, to all who contributed savouries and cakes for the coffee and cake session.  We had a wonderful spread and time for a right good natter.  It was good to catch up and to see new plotters swapping ideas with old lags – sorry hands – and these exchanges can only help set us up for an even more successful growing season ahead.  As always, this will be the last of our Community Sundays for the year: there will not be a December meet.  Watch out for the first of the new season dates, however, and we will hope to see you there.

Thanks again for all your efforts, Stuart.

Dodgy Geezers Alert

These two well dodgy characters were spotted yesterday.

They appeared to be trying to sneak a stolen tractor on site.  Where they had hidden the rest of the tractor we are not sure.  However, they were entirely brazen in their efforts and looked pretty determined. It appeared that one was providing the muscle while the other was the brains behind the scheme. They were described as being adult males, Caucasian, but with the mental age of 10-year-olds. Plotters are asked to inform the authorities if they are seen again but advised not to approach them.  You can’t be too careful. I am sure Anne and Susan would agree.

Cheaper Seeds – a new GFAA Benefit

Good news!

GFAA has joined the Dobies Gardening Associations Group Scheme. (Please note: this is Dobies with one ‘b’ and not the Dobbies with the local gardening superstore – as owned by Tesco I hear.)  Under this scheme, our plotters and volunteers ordering from Dobies will receive a 40% discount on seeds and 10% off other purchases.

Additionally, GFAA will benefit by a further 5-10% from all qualifying orders as a boost to our funds.  At a time when we are seeking new ways of finding income sources to sustain our site maintenance activities, we are hopeful this scheme might make a significant contribution – if enough plotters take part.

Easy Ordering and delivery direct to your door

  • GFAA members order personally, by phone, post or online.
  • GFAA provides each member with a paper catalogue and order form – or use the online catalogue.
  • Delivery is direct to the address of the person placing the order.
  • The unique GFAA offer code drives the discount and must be quoted at the time an order is placed.
  • Payment is with the order, by cheque, credit/debit card or PayPal.
  • Top-up orders, of any value, can be made throughout the year and will benefit from the discount.

Please note:

Whether ordering by post using the official order form, or by phone or online you must use the official GFAA order code to qualify for the discounts.  You cannot claim the discount retrospectively after the event.

Copies of the Dobies Catalogue and the Order Form printed with the unique order code will be placed in the Octagon by this weekend.  The padlock combination is the same as for all other GFAA locks.  Please help yourselves to a personal copy of the catalogue and order form – Dobies have provided us with one copy per member.  In case of difficulty please ask a Committee Member for help.

If you prefer to order online from the comfort of your sofa, please use the code from the printed order form or email Norman (gfaawebhelper[at]gmail.com) for the required code – remember, no code, no discount and no exceptions!

It is one of Dobies Terms and Conditions that we agree NOT to share the GFAA code with non-members.  They state they will cancel our group membership if we do not respect this rule.

Thanks go to Len on Plot 74 for alerting us to this scheme.

So, here’s to many happy hours of catalogue browsing!
