Dobbin rides to the rescue

Well, not exactly ‘rides’ to the rescue, but no matter, read on ….

Worried about a shortage of organic matter in the coming season? Did you miss out on all of the excellent leaf mould and cow dung last year?  Are you trying the ‘no-dig’ approach, but are short of home-grown compost?  No worries, a solution is at hand.

Brian (Plot 62) has a secret source of high-octane, but well-rotted, horse manure:  guaranteed to give your tatties just the boost they need.  Apparently, the supply is near-endless and the quality unquestioned. Straight from the horses’ ????!!!!

If you are interested in having some, please contact Brian.  If you can’t see him in person, pin a dated message to his gate.  He hopes to organise a delivery before or after Christmas – depending on interest and demand.  First-come, first-served.

However, there is no such thing as a free dump in this world, and if you want to benefit, you have to volunteer to help with collection, delivery or distribution on site.  Form an orderly queue, please!

Sorry, but I am short of copyright free horse images!

Big thanks go to Brian for being willing to take this on.

New Dobies catalogues and discount code available

Copies of the catalogue and code are now available in the Octagon.  The new code replaces the old one which is now no longer usable. Email me if you’d like the code without having to visit the Octagon.

The scheme operates as before.  Repeated orders can be placed throughout the year. Plotters get 40% off seed orders and 10% off everything else.  Orders are delivered directly to the individual.  Orders can be placed by post using the form provided, or by telephone or online, but you must use the code at the time of ordering – retrospective claims are not allowed.  In addition, GFAA gets a 10% return on all orders placed.

Please remember, this is Dobies the seed merchant and not Dobbies the Garden Centre chain, so the discount is not available locally.  Believe me, I’ve tried – all very embarrassing!

Late Summer BBQ 2018

Well, the weather may have been a bit Baltic, to begin with, but our BBQ day was still full of fun and friendship.

It was great to see plotters, volunteers, RGU and MacMillan friends there on the day.  Oh, and, by the way, the raffle generated £72 for our GFAA funds. Not bad at all!

Kingswells Callers

There was a real buzz about the site this Thursday morning.  It was with great pleasure that we welcomed 60 kids, parent-helpers and staff from Kingswells Primary School.

Thanks go to Stuart, Peter, Gill D, Gill E, Phil and Ron who acted as guides on the day. The kids declared that they had learned a lot and enjoyed themselves on what they said was, “the best trip out – ever”.

The visit was part of a project the pupils in Primary 3 are doing on growing and cooking food. We had thought of asking Nick Nairn to do a cooking demo, but instead, Stuart agreed to step in with his (now famous) Soup from a Stone demonstration.

I hear Stuart is now taking bookings for Kids’ Parties, BBQs and the like.

I think we can safely say everyone had a great time!  Thanks too go to Anne (Plot 33) for setting it all up.

Prizes on Parade

It was another great night for GFAA at this week’s Aberdeen in Bloom Reception and Prize Awards.

Special congratulations go to Susan and Phil (Plot 35) as they topped the GFAA rankings this year with their third place overall in the Aberdeen Cities Allotment Gardens Competition (Category 8).

As always, Sandy Inkster took pride of place, however, with his First Prize in the City Gardens Competition.  Here’s Sandy taking his place with the other first Prize winners.  Well done Sandy!

Thanks go to Aberdeen City Council and Deputy Provost, Alan Donnelly for hosting the event and to Pat Wilson for her first class work behind the scenes and on the night.  Thanks too to all the GFAA Plotters who entered and flew the flag for GFAA in support of the Council’s gardening efforts.

Club 10 Harvesters

It was a pleasure to welcome the Club 10 group back with us this last week.  Since June the group have been growing on some of the raised beds.  They came back to see how their stuff had grown and harvested some of the fruit and veggies.

We were blessed with a lovely early evening for the visit and all of the kids and their families seemed to get a real charge out of the activities.  We look forward to welcoming them back in the new season.
