Its Your Neighbourhood Success

It is with great pleasure that I can tell all GFAA members, volunteers and friends that at the recent Britain in Bloom hosted, It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards Day, GFAA were awarded an Outstanding Level Award and, better still, our first Certificate of Distinction.  Gill and Phil attended the event on our behalf.

Our IYN Assessors, Ian and Sandra Maclennan, were full of praise and warm words for your efforts and achievements over the season.  A copy of their Garthdee Field Allotments Association 2017 report is attached.  The Evening Express Coverage was very positive about GFAA.

We are obviously delighted with this success and I want to thank all who contributed to the effort over the year. It’s been a super season on so many fronts, but nothing could be done without the continued support of plotters, volunteers and friends.

We are planning to share congratulations and celebrations at our up-coming AGM and General Meeting on Saturday 4 November at 11.00am at RGU Riverside East Building Room 346. I hope we will have a really big turnout.  Everyone is welcome.  We want your help to set directions and priorities for the coming year.

Diary date for seed lovers

This message arrived from Lizzy Shepherd of Gone to Seed.  I know many plotters visited and enjoyed the Tarland event last year.

I hope you are busy saving seed to share with your friends and to bring along to the 2018 Seed Swap and Potato Day being held in Tarland on Saturday 24th February.
So far I have saved carrot, mangetout, cutting celery and flat leaf parsley seed; hopefully, the leek seed will have time to fully ripen…not sure yet. The photo shows how attractive the carrot and leek seed heads look, it’s worth growing them just for that!
If you would like to get hold of some of the seed envelopes now, please drop me a line and I will try and see if we can get them to you. They will be available in a few locations early next year as well, or just bring your seed along on the day and put them into envelopes there.
In the meantime, there are some really useful clips below on how to go about saving seed and isolation techniques etc:
I hope that you find these useful. We will be running another seed saving workshop at the seed swap and potato day in 2018, so why not come along to that session and learn more.

Aberdeen in Bloom Garden Competition

It was wonderful this week to see Garthdee Field so prominent in the Allotments Section of the Aberdeen in Bloom Annual Garden Competition.  We had the biggest number of entries, showing our continued support for the City Council’s efforts to promote gardening and allotments.

It was great to see so many new entrants from GFAA there at the Civic Reception to collect their certificates and prizes from the Lord Provost.  GFAA can claim to have dominated the six prizes, occupying as we did places six, five, four and two.

But the night really belonged to our own GFAA superstar – Sandy Inkster.  Not only did Sandy take our top ranking second prize for his allotment, but also he came in first in the Garden Display section for the whole city and took the overall outstanding entrant award.  What a wonderful result!

Hearty congratulations go to Sandy and all the other prize and certificate winners and thanks are due to all plotters who entered from our site.

Octagon Opening and BBQ Photos

Yesterday’s Opening Event for our Outdoor Classroom and new community facilities went exceptionally well – we even managed to dodge all the threatened showers!

Thanks go especially to Rita Callander from Greenspace Scotland who came along to open the Octagon in her role as Community Enabler for Tesco Bags of Help, to Kevin Anderson, Manager of our local TESCO branch for coming along to show his support and to Liz Hancock from RGU, who have provided so much support for the Community Garden over the last five years..

 

Thanks too to all the plotters, volunteers and friends who worked so hard on the day to make the event a success and to those who could not make it, but contributed raffle prizes and donations.

It was super to have so many friends from The MacMillan Cancer Charity join us.  The raffle brought in £146 and proceeds will be split equally between GFAA and MacMillan.

Community Sunday – Huge Thanks!

I’d like to thank everyone who turned out to help on yesterday’s Community Sunday, plotters and friends from RGU and MacMillan – indeed even Mr Toad Jnr!  With so many hands available we got through a tonne of tasks and the new style General Meeting generated all sorts of good ideas for funding, better gardening and wider community engagement. It was super to see so many old hands and new faces on the day.  Thanks to all who managed along and for the bakers and makers who produced such a wonderful spread for the coffee and cake session.

Community Sunday 16 July

This coming Sunday – 16 July – is Community Sunday.  We are hoping for a good turnout of plotters as it is one of the last before our annual, It’s Your Neighbourhood Assessment Visit.  We want to get the site into good shape.

We will follow the usual format, starting at 11.00 and stopping for coffee and cake at 12.30 or so.  However, as a wee experiment we are planning to hold a General Meeting at the same time.  The purpose of the General Meeting is to gather plotters’ views on priorities and issues of current concern and for the future.

We hope this will be a convenient arrangement for plotters and will help improve communication within the Association.  I look forward to seeing you you on the day.
