Welcome Mr Toad

I spotted this toad near my manure pile this week.

It would be great to build up a record of the wildlife that we see on our site.  If you spot something interesting, please let Norman know.  Better still, if you can catch a photo or some video please pass it onto him at gfaawebhelper [at] gmail.com.

Elephant Hawk-Moth – It’s a stunner!

Thanks to David for pointing out this beautiful Elephant Hawk-Moth visiting on his plot recently.   What a stunner! Otherwise known as Deilephila Elpenor (that’s easy for you to say!)

Read more on Wikipedia.

We are keen to build up photos and information about all the wildlife our site supports.  If you have any photos or information about sightings please send them on to me or Norman.

Community Sunday

The weather seems to be set fair, so we are hoping for a bumper turnout for this week’s Community Sunday – 21 May.

Coming along is a great way to meet other plotters and get up to date with what’s going on around our site.  We have a lot happening right now and many helping hands make for light work.

I hope we will see the regulars and some new faces on the day.  As always, there will be coffee and cake (about 12.30) in the sunshine and plenty opportunities for a natter during and after the activities.

Carole Baxter April Visit

Carole is a regular visitor to Garthdee Field as you know and plans to be back with us on April 26 from around 10.00.  Carole will be hoping to record some material for her Radio Scotland programme, Out for the Weekend.

If you would like to meet with Carole, please come along.  We cannot promise, but for sure Carole will want to meet as many plotters as time allows.

Carole has been very supportive of our efforts in the past, personally donating flowers to the South Bank and taking a great interest in our activities in the Community Garden and on our plots.

Please do try to find the time to come along with any questions or stories you want to tell.  The more the merrier!

Stuart

Community Sunday March 2017

Thanks to everyone who managed along today and made this one of our best turnouts ever.  With so many hands on site we got an amazing amount of work done.  The sandwiches, cake and coffee were excellent too!  If you missed out this time we look forward to seeing you on April 16 for Community Sunday 2.

Feeding the 5000

Outdoor Classroom Work Begins

Following the tremendous support from our plotters and the wider public at the end of last year, helping us obtain a grant of £12000 from Tesco Bags of Help, work has now begun on site to build our Outdoor Classroom/Shelter. The octagonal larch clad wooden building will be fully enclosed and suitable for wheel-chair access and is for all our plotters to use as well as the primary school children and visiting groups from from Robert Gordon University (RGU).

The building has been sited in the Community Garden such that it sits above the highest historic flood line. As most of our plotters will be aware, the site has a tendency to flood after heavy and continuous rainfall and this is made worse by an underground stream from up near the old railway line which feeds into the low-lying area at the bottom of the site.

Once the building is complete, work will begin shortly thereafter, using funds from RGU, to establish the necessary paths for all users of the community garden. If anyone would like to lend a hand or spend an hour here and there helping out with our Community Garden activities that would be much appreciated. It is the community aspect of our activities that attract the funding and your support will contribute to making our site just that little bit more special and successful.
