Garthdee Field on the Wireless

Well Radio for the youngsters I guess.

Your will recall that Fiona and Anna from BBC Scotland visited a week or se back to record a number of interviews for their programme, It’s a Small World. Fiona has been in touch with the details of the upcoming broadcast.

I just wanted to let you know that the Garthdee allotment programme will be going out under the title of It’s a Small World on BBC Radio Scotland on Sunday 19 March at 6 00 am. Very early, I know but you can also access the programme at any time via BBC Sounds. I’d be grateful if you can let our other contributors know also please.

Anna and I very much enjoyed our visit to the allotments and I hope you like what you hear.

Many thanks for all your help.

Best wishes
Fiona

Thanks to all who helped out on the day.

Bonfire Date Change

Please note the annual bonfire has been moved back a week to Tuesday 21 March 2023. Sorry – but the weather dictates.

Annual Bonfire

Our annual bonfire will take place on Tuesday 21 March starting at 9.30 am. Come along and help feed the stuff for burning onto the fire.

Small Beginnings

Make sure you take this opportunity to get rid if any scrap or rotting timber, branches, prunings etc and help keep our allotment tidy and free from rubbish.

Feeding the fire takes a massive effort through most of the day. It is certainly an occasion when many hands make for light work. If you can spare an hour at anytime in the morning or early afternoon, please come along and help out. We will be serving hot and cold drinks, savouries and cake throughout the day.

If you’re wearing nylon clothing beware of sparks melting small holes in the material –it’s best to wear very old clothes. As always – stay safe!

Heating Up!

Garthdee Field on High

If you have visited your allotment recently you may have been greeted by scenes like this –

All very depressing

A wee warning, if needed, that nets need to be removed from fruit cages and other vulnerable structures before winter comes, or else snow cleared from them before it turns to ice.

But this too will pass and here is a wee reminder of just how wonderful Garthdee Field looks at its best. The video was shot in mid July – as I recall. Best viewed in full screen mode.

Thanks go to Alison (Plot 80) for arranging for this aerial video to be made and to her friend, Alan Rae who programmed and flew the drone.

IYN Award 2022

Phil (Plot 57) attended an It’s Your Neighbourhood Celebration hosted by Aberdeen City Council this week and was presented with our top ranking, “Outstanding with Distinction” Award Certificate for our 2022 entry.

It was smashing to see us maintain our ranking for another year and thanks go to all of the plotters, volunteers and friends of Garthdee Field Allotments whose efforts around the site and on plots made it possible.

Our community projects are always recognised as our strength on these occasions and we very much hope our Fresh Food for Frugal Families project will win funding in the current Scottish Government’s Just Transition Scheme. If you haven’t voted for us here’s the link and remember, everyone in the household can vote! Voting closes tomorrow at noon – so please vote now!

Caught in the act

A wee reminder that we can’t be too careful about site security. Luckily, we managed to put a stop to this daylight robbery before the culprit made away with this rather nice greenhouse.

Obviously the greenhouse was arriving not leaving and will soon be available if any plotter is interested. It was kindly donated to us by a local resident. Watch this space or your email boxes for more information if it’s of interest. At six foot square it would sit nicely on a whole or half plot.
