Plot Working & Covid-19

You will be aware of Pat Wilson’s email stating that the Council is leaving the decision to the individual allotment holder whether or not to visit their plot during the current national emergency.

Plotters who decide to visit their plots will want to take account of this further advice issued by Stuart.

“Hi Everyone,
You will have noted that the City Council have agreed with the UK government’s advice, expounded by Michael Gove that it is ok to visit your allotment. I think most of us are relieved that we are permitted this freedom when there are so many other restrictions impacting our lives.
I am emailing you to ask that you strictly follow the rules which attach to this freedom to visit your plot. I have repeated the guidance from the BBC Gardeners website below.

Avoid public transport if possible. Instead walk, run, cycle or drive to the allotment, either on your own or with one other member of your household.
Do not pick up anyone on the way and travel to the allotment with them. This is not allowed. If you bump into someone on the way then maintain safe social distancing protocols (stand two metres apart).

Wash or sanitise your hands after using the allotment gate. It would be helpful to others if you wiped down the gate, as well, if you can.

Do not work on the allotment in groups of more than two. If you share the plot with someone from a different household then you must observe safe social distancing rules. Ideally, work out a timetable so you can visit the plot separately.

If you bump into people then maintain safe social distancing protocols at all times. Do not make anyone a cup of tea. Do not share tools. Do not visit the allotment shop.

Wash or sanitise your hands thoroughly before and after eating food, and when you get home.

The key points are – no more than two people on your plot at one time and maintain that 2 metre social distancing.
We don’t want to jeopardise our and our fellow plotters’ freedoms by behaving irresponsibly.

APRIL AUDITS CANCELLED
Pat Wilson has asked me to advise everyone that the Council have cancelled the plot audits for April.
Stay safe and compliant!

With this in mind The Octagon should not be used for group meetings or coffee breaks until further notice.

The Treehouse Nursery

We had the pleasure of welcoming Fiona and Rhona from The Treehouse Nursery on the RGU campus on site last week.

Fiona, Rhona and Stuart

Fiona and Rhona visited to see around the site and discuss with Stuart possibilities for their nursery kids to visit in the year ahead.

I am sure we will all agree it would be great to see more youngsters on site enjoying the open air and getting a taste for gardening and growing their own food.

Introducing Rory Raitt

We met Rory on his first visit on site today.

Rory is a professional photographer here in Aberdeen and is interested in using Garthdee Field as the focus for a Photo Essay with the intention of celebrating allotments as important green spaces.

I am sure all plotters will give Rory a warm Garthdee welcome when he is next on site. But don’t pester him too much for portraits of your prize parsnips!

Research opportunity

Dr. Anja Byg of the Hutton Institute has been in touch and Garthdee plotters are invited to participate in this research project.

I am writing to you as part of a research project carried out by social scientists from the James Hutton Institute and Scotland’s Rural College. The research focuses on ways of managing soils and biodiversity in Scotland. As part of this research project, we are looking for people who are growing things at different scales from garden owners and allotment holders to farmers and other land owners/managers and who would be willing to be interviewed by one of our team. The interview would take around one-and-a-half hours and would take place at a time and place convenient to you. It would focus on what you do on your plot, your experiences as well as your more general views on nature, biodiversity and soils. No specific knowledge, expertise or kind of approach is required to take part in the interview only a willingness to share your experiences with us. Attached is some more information about the research. We would be grateful if you could let us know if you would be interested in taking part and if you could pass on this email and attached information to other plot holders at the Garthdee Field Allotment Association. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Interested plotters can contact Stuart or Michael for more details.

August Community Sunday

All set for this Sunday’s efforts? Coffee and cake as ever. Or a chance to check out the new lawnmower!

Gwen’s Garden Request

Benji from Gwen’s Garden have asked for our help.

“Can I ask for help with the project we have in the field next to you called Gwen’s Garden. We’re a small grassroots group helping promote bio diversity in the area. And are asking for some help with donations of any spare flowers or plants preferably perennials but all is welcome.”

We’d like to work in partnership with the allotments to really promote diversity back into the area. I’ve attached are tree planting plan for winter 2020, and a link to our Facebook page and our page on its your neighbourhood site. If you can spread the word around the allotments it would be truly appreciated.

This is an excellent project and I am sure many plotters will want to help. You can reach Benji by email at: benespindola@googlemail.com.
