TAMS 2015

You will recall that GFAA participated in The Allotment Market Stall Project over the last two seasons. The project collects surplus produce from allotment sites and sells it off , so spreading the benefits of allotment growing to the wider public.

TAMS have received Comic Relief funding to continue this season and are beginning to plan out how they will work. TAMS will be aiming to build on its success last season and hopes for even more participation. Last year the project made a very helpful contribution to GFAA funds from the sale of our surpluses. All sorts of surpluses contribute – from fancy melons to the humble rhubarb stalk.

The produce will be sold at the Duthie Park on a Friday and Hazlehead Park on a Saturday, the first set up being earlier this year commencing on: Friday 17 July 2015.

Cath Pilley from TAMS is recruiting stall volunteers, therefore, if you would be interested in volunteering for TAMS, please contact her asap.

Snap, Crackle and Pop

Today’s Spring Bonfire had a bit of everything – snap, crackle and pop, not to mention the whee of exploding snails. We were faced with what appeared to be a mountain of material – old rasp canes, rotten timber, even whole trees.

However, the event went to prove the old adage – many hands make light work – as with over a dozen helpers pitching in at different times, the last bundles of stuff were consigned to the flames by the early afternoon.

With apologies to the many I failed to get photos of, it was great to see the site get a major clean-up and so much rubbish cleared away.

Saturday 18th April -Bonfire

There will be a bonfire on Saturday 18th April, starting at 10.00 and continuing through the day. Help with stocking the bonfire will be appreciated through the day!

Please be aware that Friday 17th will be the last day this year for feeding the bonfire pile with unwanted wood rubbish from your plot.

Sunday 19th April – Community Sunday

We are having our usual third Sunday of the month Community Sunday at 11.00 to maintain and improve the community areas of the allotment site. Cakes and tea will be provided around 12.30!

Tasks available for action include:

– weeding the wildflower garden

– finishing digging the Primary School plot, and top dressing

– pothole filling on access roads

– clearing weeds at the bases of fruit trees and laying leaves

– repairing the bothy roof seal

– trial digging at one of the raised beds.

Spring Flowers

You will remember that we spent one of our Community Sunday’s at the back-end of the year planting 2000 spring bulbs kindly supplied via Aberdeen City Council. Well, it’s been a long, cold wait, but the fruits of our labours are now out for all to see and in their full splendour. They certainly add a lovely splash of colour around our site and bring the promise of better days ahead in the new growing season.

I am not sure if it is wise to bring up the issue of immigration just at present, but we currently have a couple of visitors or new residents on our site who are likely to bring the issue to the fore before too long. As they continue to eat just about every green shoot in sight and on site, suggestions for their repatriation to the far reaches of the Deeside Line would be welcomed I am sure.

A Straw in the Wind

Gill Earle from Plot 64 has come by a large bale of straw and has kindly offered to share it with other plotters. Gill is experimenting with a no dig method of growing tatties in straw and of course straw is a proven way protecting strawberries from contact with the soil, rot and slugs and other crops from late or early frosts. If you can use some on your own allotment please see Gill to arrange uplift.
