Community Sunday March 2015

Our latest Community Sunday was our most successful to date. Many thanks to all those who turned up. With well over a dozen willing helpers we made light work of:

Trimming the tree branches along the site’s Southern boundary
de-littering and removing fallen branches over the site
digging over the area set aside for primary school visits in the future
collecting waste materials for the up-coming bonfire.

With the work out of the way in record time there was plenty opportunity to enjoy the coffee and cake session at the bothy.

A date for your diary: the next scheduled Community Sunday will be on 19 April. The more the merrier!

Hosted by STV’s Chris Harvey.
Come along and have your gardening problems and queries answered by our expert panel.
Proceeds raised will help Momentum Skills support people with acquired brain injuries and other disabilities in North East Scotland.

Chiltern Seeds and Veg Book 2015

No doubt Seed Catalogues have dropped through letterboxes for weeks now, but at the weekend something new arrived with us – the Chiltern Seeds Catalogue and, better still, their Veg Book for 2015.

The Veg Book was a new find and is great fun to browse and read. It’s full of charming illustrations and even more full with suggestions of veggies to grow from seed: some are well-known ‘heritage’ varieties and some new and unusual selections.

Both are free and you can apply for your copy via their website at the link above. Needless to say, I have no connection with them, other than I like their alternative take on things.

Spring coiled if not yet quite sprung!

I was nice to see so many people working their plots in bright sunshine today and lots of activity – dung deliveries, winter digging, plant sharing, path laying, tree pruning and general tidying up.

I popped into the Bothy and I see some kind soul has donated a big batch of gardening mags and a set of seed catalogues, so no need to be idle if you get caught in a shower.

With the weather favouring the ducks today when I had free time and hoped to get on with my delayed winter digging I have resorted to surfing some of my favourite allotment and gardening sites and adding them to our Links page above. Community Sunday in March

The first Community Sunday for 2015 is scheduled for March 15 and we plan a communal bonfire on that day – if the weather gods permit. Other activities may include helping with a general Spring Clean of the site and preparation of the intended plot for youngsters to use.

If you have materials on your plot suitable for burning on the bonfire please bring them along on the day or drop them off at the top of the site in the open area next to the Deeside Line. Please do not leave materials unsuitable for a bonfire.

Kickoff with be at 11.00am as usual and there will be coffee and cake at the Bothy for all volunteers at the end – say at 12.30.
