Scotmid Donation to GFAA

I am delighted to say that GFAA has received a £200 donation from the Scotmid Co-operative Society via their fund to support communities across Scotland.

We are pleased to receive a grant of £200 to spend on tools for use in the Community Garden and Primary Plot.  We are going to buy handtools adapted especially for younger gardeners and those with disabilities who might find full-size adult tools too heavy or unwieldy.

Our warm thanks got to Scotmid for their generosity.

Polytunnel Guidelines

Thanks go to Susan (Plot 35) who has kindly updated our Polytunnel Guidelines for the 20128 season.  The Guidelines are available from the Advice Tab at the top of our Homepage or directly via this link.

RHSA Gardening Workshops

New Course: From Soil to Sky

The University of Dundee offers an online course in Citizen Science: From Soil to Sky in which participants will come to understand soil and explore global environmental soil issues while becoming citizen scientists.

Registration is open now and the course starts 19 February, takes 4 hours per week to complete and runs for 4 weeks.  As they say:

“Where can you find all sorts of useful and important information about your environment? You might be surprised to know it’s beneath your feet, in the soil. On this course you will discover interesting things about your own soil and become part of the new GROW Citizen Observatory European-wide community. You will collaborate with other growers and scientists to discover the impact global soil practices have on major issues like the environment and food growing.

Now is the time to make a difference, join us, improve your soil and become a citizen scientist!”

Mindful Plotting Research

Thanks go to Michael and Marion Malcolm for sharing this contact and proposing this post.  I have just completed the survey and found it entertaining and thought-provoking.

Greetings,

My name is Tereza Martinovska and I am in my final year of Honours Psychology at the University of Glasgow. I am currently collecting responses for my final year project under the supervision of Dr Maxine Swingler.

In my project I investigate the relationship between community gardening, mindfulness, nature connectedness and well-being. The data is collected confidentially and anonymously via an online survey and the project has been approved by the University of Glasgow Ethics Committee. Do you think some of your gardeners would be willing to help me out with this piece of research? I am looking to reach community gardeners specifically and I would be very grateful if you could help me distribute the link to the survey.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/W7M89YR

Would you mind passing the link on? I don’t know whether people are most responsive through a mailing list or on FB but the link can be shared anywhere.

It is mentioned in the Information form but maybe worth mentioning again that the responses are anonymous and that it would be amazing to have complete questionnaires but people are absolutely fine to skip questions that might make them feel uncomfortable. The survey should take abut 25-35 minutes to complete.

If you know of any other groups or individuals who might be interested, please do not hesitate to either send them the link, or if they want to know more information, pass them on to me.

I am hoping that my research will be able to contribute to a better understanding of the role of community gardening in people’s lives, and potentially inform policies supporting development and maintenance of community gardens.

Thank you very much for reading through this lengthy message. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via FB or on university email: 2146784M@student.gla.ac.uk

I wish you all the best!

Tereza Martinovska
