IYN Assessment Visit 2018

We enjoyed a supportive and formative It’s Your Neighbourhood Assessment visit on Thursday from our new assessors, Steven Shaw and Daniel Shand.

Steven and Daniel seemed impressed with our efforts over the year and went out of their way to comment on the friendly buzz they notice on their visits to Garthdee Field.  They also offered us lots of encouragement and helpful advice, especially about what actions will be needed if we decide to go for Green Flag status in the coming year.

It will be some wee time before we know the outcome of our assessment, so please cross your fingers and watch this space!

TAMS on the up

Our TAMS donations seem to be bigger than ever this season.  This is great news.  Donations to TAMS will produce income for GFAA at the end of the year and help spread the health and environmental benefits of eating locally grown food around our wider community.

If you want to donate any surplus you have, but can’t make it down for the Thursday afternoon pick-up, let us know and we can arrange for our volunteers, Gordon and Mike, to pick up stuff for you on Thursday morning.  Please be specific about what you want to be taken!

We’re in the money!

Plotters will recall GFAA joined Dobies Group Scheme last year, offering a 40% discount on orders placed for plotters and a 10% benefit forAssociation funds.  Well, 40% on seeds and 10% on everything else.

Dobies (that is Dobies the seed merchants with one “b”, not the local chain of garden centres) have been in touch to say that they are going to be putting £56.63 into our association bank account at the end of the month.  That is based on a value of £499.34 (after discount) of total orders placed with them by our members.

This is quite encouraging for the first year of the scheme’s operation. A total of 22 orders were placed in the course of the year.  We joined the scheme a wee bit late in the season.  The new catalogues will be available in September, along with a new unique discount code that must be used.  Please note the old code can no longer be used after the end of this month.  If you would like to take part in the coming year, please look out for further info in the course of next month.

Thanks to all who supported the scheme this time around.  I have not heard of any problems or disappointments, but please let me know if you have any concerns.

Community Sunday August 2018

Thanks to everyone who made it along to help us prepare the site for our IYN Assessment.  It was wonderful to see such a good turnout on what started out as a very unpromising day weather-wise.  A special thanks to Alice (Plot Micro 2c) on her first outing on a Community Sunday and to the magnificent bakers.

What a team!

Major Development Proposed in our Area

Thanks to Val (Plot 23) for suggesting this post.

A major planning application has been submitted for the land adjacent to our allotment site.  Any objections must be submitted within the next few days.

The plan is for a residential-led development for the retired/elderly (including affordable housing), a 50 bedroom care home and approximately 500sqm of ancillary retail/community use, together with public open space and associated infrastructure including a link road.

Fuller details are available on Aberdeen City’s Planning Site.

The Application reference number is 181224.

Community Sunday July 2018

Many thanks to all who helped out yesterday at our Community Sunday. Some really hard work was done with the Primary School plot completely weeded as well as all the raised beds – all in an hour and a half. Special mention for Ava from plot 38 who gathered up stones unearthed during earlier weeding- and she’s only 8 but she did a great job.
