We’re in the money!

Plotters will recall GFAA joined Dobies Group Scheme last year, offering a 40% discount on orders placed for plotters and a 10% benefit forAssociation funds.  Well, 40% on seeds and 10% on everything else.

Dobies (that is Dobies the seed merchants with one “b”, not the local chain of garden centres) have been in touch to say that they are going to be putting £56.63 into our association bank account at the end of the month.  That is based on a value of £499.34 (after discount) of total orders placed with them by our members.

This is quite encouraging for the first year of the scheme’s operation. A total of 22 orders were placed in the course of the year.  We joined the scheme a wee bit late in the season.  The new catalogues will be available in September, along with a new unique discount code that must be used.  Please note the old code can no longer be used after the end of this month.  If you would like to take part in the coming year, please look out for further info in the course of next month.

Thanks to all who supported the scheme this time around.  I have not heard of any problems or disappointments, but please let me know if you have any concerns.

Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (UK)

Thanks go to Sonya )Plot 97B) for suggesting this post.

This citizen science research project gives details of 14 pollinator-friendly flowers and invites participants to monitor plants and visitors in a set square of their plot.

Break-ins and the Police

The Police visited the site today and spoke with a number of plotters who suffered break-ins to their sheds.

They request that all plotters affected phone in a notification of the event including any damage or losses via the 101 non-emergency number and cite Incident Number CF 0167170718.  This will allow the Police to take a coordinated approach in their response.

Bees’ needs abound

Am I right in thinking there have been more bees around this year?  I guess the weather has been to their liking.  However, it’s clear they need all the help we can offer them.  This is Bees’ Needs Week.  Check out these ideas for helping them out.

Using water wisely

Thanks go to Ranald (Plot 75) for bringing this advice from Scottish Water to our attention.

Scottish Water – Advice

Customers across Scotland asked to use water wisely  03 July 2018

Scottish Water is asking customers to use water wisely in their daily activities to help maintain supplies during the current period of hot summer weather.

Following a sustained dry period without any significant rainfall, customer usage has increased significantly. With the current weather conditions forecast to continue, Scottish Water is encouraging people to take simple but important steps to conserve our public water supplies.

In some areas, there has been a 30% increase in demand for water during the summer so far and an additional 140 million litres are currently being produced and pushed through the system every day to meet current customer usage.

Scottish Water has been monitoring the situation closely and managing supplies across the country, including deploying additional resources to move water between distribution areas and tankering water to supplement local networks.

Some water treatment works and distribution networks are working at near capacity to meet demand.

Average reservoir levels are generally normal for this time of year but the current level of usage and continuing dry weather means stocks of stored water available for use are reducing.

Customers are being asked to reduce usage wherever possible. Businesses are also being asked to consider their usage and how they can use water more efficiently. Simple, practical steps which we encourage include:

Taking shorter showers

Using a watering can rather than a hose to water plants

Using a bucket rather than a hose to wash vehicles; only washing windscreens/lights instead of the whole vehicle

Turning off taps in the home whenever possible

Using washing machines and dishwashers fully loaded

Plotters are asked to take note.  Using a watering can rather than a hose helps put the water where it needs to be.  Please note that the use of sprinkler devices and systems that water whole areas of plots rather than specific plants is not appropriate.  Your cooperation is appreciated.
