Orchard Brae Raised Bed

We could not have hoped for a better day to work on the new raised bed we have built for Orchard Brae School’s Nursery.

Don’t worry, we did finally sort out our alternating layers and corners and got them into the right order!  The bed is three meters long by one meter wide and almost half a meter high and build with timbers kindly donated by Robertson Construction.

Our thanks go to Roddy Mckinnon for all his help and organisation on the day.

New Activity

GFAA is now working with The Stronger Families Inside Out Group to offer growing activities as part of their Club 10 Programme.  Further details are available via the Collaborations Link above or here.

If you would like to help please contact Stuart in the first instance.

Our Orchard Brae Project

Orchard Brae is a new school and nursery in Aberdeen, designed especially for pupils with additional support needs.

A number of weeks ago we were approached, asking if we could perhaps help with the development of their Nursery School garden.

Today we got a squad in place to make a start.  The re-seeding of the grassy areas in the playground was identified as a priority.

We had a good day, in great company, but in the heat, it was pretty hard going. We are going to have to make at least one return visit.  If you could spare a couple of hours to help out over the next few weeks, please see Stuart or me.

Thanks to Mike and Gordon, and especially Ron, who came along at short notice to lend a hand.

Fit a bonnie bonfire!

Once Stuart got the idea that triangles need three legs, today’s bonfire got off to a blazing start.

After that, we got on like a house on fire.

Apologies are due to all of those who came to help, but were not captured on film.  Let’s just say the photographer got caught up in the heat of the moment.

We did manage to catch sight of Gordon, our volunteer who came along to help, making this four days this week he has been helping out. Ashley gets the ‘Best Boots of the Day’ award.

So, with so many hands to help we shifted the entire collection of stuff and finished with a cup of well-earned coffee just after twelve noon.  The Committee send their sincere thanks to everyone who helped.

The best news of all is that we get to do it all again tomorrow for Community Sunday and the weather is set fair again.  This is more like it!

River Dee Trust Tree Planting Event

Calum Hislop from the River Dee Trust has been in contact to flag up this up-coming community opportunity.

The River Dee Trust as part of its river bank improvements is planning a significant tree planting event on the 27th April on the land behind Sainsburys.

I am getting in touch to ask if you or any of your membership would like to get involved.

The event is being organised as a community event with support from the River Dee Trust. The Scottish Woodland Trust, and the AWPR fund. Sainsburys are also offering to support the event with hot drinks and snacks.

I will forward promotional material as it is produced but thought it a good idea to flag the event up to in advance.

Hats off to Robertson Construction!

Despite the weather, our allotment holders and volunteers were all smiles this week when Robertson Construction delivered surplus pallets and timber from their Caledon Court site on the corner of Garthdee and Auchinyell roads.  Better still, they have promised more in the future.

The handover was made by Kelly Simms who is Group Community Development Coordinator for the Company. A few days earlier, Kelly, on behalf of Robertson Group, had presented us with over 40 large Easter eggs which were given to Kaimhill Primary School for the children who visit the allotments as part of their curriculum during the summer term.

We greatly appreciate such gestures from businesses like Robertson Group supporting the local community so it’s a big thank-you to them from all at GFAA.

Plans for the use of the materials are being finalised and will be announced soon.
