A very special Community Sunday

Today’s Community Sunday saw our best ever turnout with plotters, volunteers and friends from the Macmillan and RGU plots all well represented.  As a result we got a bucketload of tasks done on the wider site.

Sincere thanks to everyone who made it along and turned in such a wonderful team effort and to the bakers for the affa fine cakes.  Gold medals all round!

Community Sunday IYN Extra Session

We have our It’s Your Neighbourhood Competition assessment visit on August 18.  All GFAA members are invited along on the day to meet with our assessors.  We are hoping for a record turnout of plotters.  Please come along if you can manage.

We have a power of work to do to have the site ship-shape for the visit and so we plan to have an extra Community Sunday session this coming Sunday – August 14 at 11.00 – 12.30.  As usual it will be all hands to the wheel with good company to get things done and then a coffee and cake session at the Bothy to celebrate a job well done.

Sunday Post!

Please come along and help if you can spare the time.

It’s a drooked disaster!

Our Kaimhill Primary 2 visitors got a drooking coming along the Deeside Line this afternoon and had to turn back and abandon their visit.  What a shame. :-(

However, Mrs Rough brought along Irene and Kelsey to present us with a lovely set of thank you letters and a very special present – the GFAA Site Owl.  I think you will agree it’s rather special.

We have hosted over a dozen Kaimhill Primary visits this season and all of them have been a pleasure.  We look forward to welcoming more again in the coming session.

It’s a Primary Scorcher!

We welcomed Ms Walker and her Primary 3 class on site for the last of their five visits today.  As always they were as keen as mustard and a real credit to Kaimhill School.

Setting up for the stone painting activity took a fair bit of work in the heat, but the results certainly made it all worthwhile.

While half the class helped with the stone painting that will become part of our Britain in Bloom 50th Anniversary display, the others helped barrow chips on to the MacMillan Plot for their paths – hot and thirsty work for sure.

We have only one more week of visits this year, on Tuesday and Thursday at 1.30, but we are a bit short-handed on both days: if you could lend a hand to help supervise activities please get in touch.

Kaimhill Primary 2 Visits

We (Stuart, Marion, Gill, Jacqui and Norman) have enjoyed playing host to Mrs McKenzie and her Primary 2 pupils over the summer. Thanks are due too to Vinnie and Michael for their help in preparing and maintaining the revised beds, primary plot and polytunnel.

It’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters over the weeks they have been coming and to know they are enjoying learning about the joys and benefits of gardening.

Activities have included:

  • Sowing salad leaves, beans and peas
  • Pricking out and potting up
  • Planting tatties, beans and onions
  • Extensive dung and compost shifting
  • Veggie and fruit identification and tasting tours

I think we can say a good time has been had by all – although the older members of the GFAA team (no names, no pack drill) seem to need to retreat for a lie down in a darkened room after the sessions!
