It was a great pleasure to see so many old and new faces at our first Community Sunday in a while. Thanks to everyone who managed to come along.

It was a great pleasure to see so many old and new faces at our first Community Sunday in a while. Thanks to everyone who managed to come along.

Friday 22nd July was a special day at Garthdee Field when we hosted a visit from Katie Reekie of the Aberdeen Family Wellbeing Service and two families from her group along with support from Lucy at Community Food Initiative North East (CFINE).
Katie has started a new role as a Project Worker with Children 1st which is the working name of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSPCC). and is developing a community gardening project based in Balgownie.

The project will support children and families to grow their own fruit and vegetables as well as providing opportunities to engage in creative activities to make the garden a welcoming space for everyone.
Accompanied by Anne and Jordi from our Volunteer Group, the families explored our site tasting some summer fruits, visiting the wildlife pond and the polytunnel. At the end of the site tour soft drinks and snacks were supplied by Katie and the young children had a good run-about on the grass playing “Tig” with any willing adults! (There was no escape!)
With paper and coloured pens the children drew pictures of their visit while Katie held a short focus group noting the thoughts and views of the parents.
It really was a good fun session.

Tuesday’s group set to on our volunteers’ tools and the tool store to great effect. Thanks to all who helped and apologies to those who missed getting their photos taken this time.

Congratulations and thanks to all volunteers who helped spruce up the Nursery Plot in preparation for the new season ahead. We look forward to hearing the patter of tiny feet and squeals of delight again soon. Apologies to Nick and Jack who missed out on the photo opportunity this time.
GFAA is a longterm supporter of The Allotment Market Stall (TAMS) and it was a delight to hear that last season we earned our largest ever dividend from the sales of our surpluses.

Thanks go to all the plotters, volunteers and friends of GFAA who helped generate the £495.71 for our funds – and of course to the TAMS’ Team for all their efforts in the community or our behalf.
Over recent weeks our Volunteer Squad have been building a set of planters for Harlaw Academy’s Parent Council. The planters will be used in an outdoor social area constructed for pupil use. It was a pleasure to drop off the planters this week and meet Mr McLaren (Headteacher).

Thanks go to Catriona Allan, Chair of the Parent Council for facilitating the build so well and of course to the many members of the Volunteer Squad who helped find and deconstruct the pallet materials, and build and paint the planters.
Thanks also go to the NHS Grampian Health Improvement Fund as the build would not have been possible without access to the refurbed Bothy and tools.
