New Course: From Soil to Sky

The University of Dundee offers an online course in Citizen Science: From Soil to Sky in which participants will come to understand soil and explore global environmental soil issues while becoming citizen scientists.

Registration is open now and the course starts 19 February, takes 4 hours per week to complete and runs for 4 weeks.  As they say:

“Where can you find all sorts of useful and important information about your environment? You might be surprised to know it’s beneath your feet, in the soil. On this course you will discover interesting things about your own soil and become part of the new GROW Citizen Observatory European-wide community. You will collaborate with other growers and scientists to discover the impact global soil practices have on major issues like the environment and food growing.

Now is the time to make a difference, join us, improve your soil and become a citizen scientist!”

No Dig Champion – Charles Dowding

Charles Dowding is coming to give a talk at the Phoenix Community Centre at Newton Dee Village on Saturday 3 February.

Many plotters will be aware that Charles has practised his, ‘no dig method’ of growing vegetables for well over thirty years now.  In 2013 he moved to a derelict smallholding of one-fifth of an acre and very quickly transformed it into a productive vegetable garden.  He documented his efforts on a popular YouTube Channel (he has nearly 50,000 subscribers) and in a series of well-received books.

This link will take you to the Eventbrite Website to make reservations.

Calling all snappers!

The Royal Horticultural Society has teamed up with the Sunday Times to offer a new photo competition, encouraging young and old to get outside and, ‘record how enriching and inspiring gardens and plants can be.” It is free to enter, and there is a prize of £5000 for the overall winner, and a secondary award goes to the winner of each of nine categories.

The categories include:
Welcoming Garden Wildlife
Celebrating Gardens
Pure Plants

A Portfolio category is for six images in a series or based on a single theme or style of photo.

Submit your entries via the RHS Website by 10.00am 1 March 2018. Full details are available on the RHS Website.  How nice would it be if Garthdee Field could feature in some of the winning photos!

Stonking Community Sunday

Our Community Sundays seem to go from strength to strength. Todays was a proper tonic.  It was great to see so many plotters and volunteers join us.  We had so many willing hands we were able to set up three work squads.  As a result, we managed to fill all of the potholes around the site, complete the planting of the 2000 Spring bulbs the Council gifted us, set about a big tidy up of the wood chip pile and the top carpark and collect all the leaves from along the Western perimeter fence. What a magnificent effort!  Many, many thanks are due to all who found the time to attend.

Thanks too, to all who contributed savouries and cakes for the coffee and cake session.  We had a wonderful spread and time for a right good natter.  It was good to catch up and to see new plotters swapping ideas with old lags – sorry hands – and these exchanges can only help set us up for an even more successful growing season ahead.  As always, this will be the last of our Community Sundays for the year: there will not be a December meet.  Watch out for the first of the new season dates, however, and we will hope to see you there.

Thanks again for all your efforts, Stuart.

Blown away by AGM

I want to thank everyone who turned up to make our AGM and General Meeting such successes today.  I am still buzzing with the ideas raised in discussions.  Or perhaps it’s from the free-flowing prosecco!

It was wonderful to see so many there and to get such positive messages and suggestions.  Wonderful too to get the two vacant places on our Committee filled with willing nominees from the floor.  My thanks and congratulations to Alex and Gillie.

Special thanks go to Bruce for his very interesting talk, Soil: and how to improve it. We hope to get a copy online in the next week or so for the benefit of those you could not make it along today.

Thanks too to Michael and Jacqui for the excellent cakes.  I expect we will see them on Britain’s got Baking Talent next year.  So, thanks again everyone.  Clearly, we are going to need a bigger room from now on!
