Dear all,
I’d like to bring Gabe Cook, the Ciderologist north from Herefordshire to Aberdeen to entertain and inform, but also help facilitate the setting up of a network of those interested in craft cider making (or sampling) across the North East, Angus, Tayside and the Highlands. You can find him on Instagram and Youtube.
If you are interested in setting up community orchards, or community cider making, have a start-up cider business or just want to make a batch of cider at home, this is someone well worth listening to, with lots of international experience and passion about both cider and perry. Just like wine in the 80’s and beer in the last two decades, the craft of cider is really taking off across the globe and in places far from traditional heartlands. Gabe has just written an entertaining introduction to it, which you can buy from Waterstones I’m sure.
You may be an existing cider producer or a commercial organisation with an interest in this area, and I’d like to hear from you too. The potential for food and drink enterprises based on apple production is significant and a key focus for the Chamber of Commerce and ambitions to diversify the rural/urban economy.
If you are interested and might come, please tell me. I need to gauge interest to choose a venue.
If you know someone who has dabbled in cider or is serious about it, then please pass it on but also put them in touch with me direct if you can. Are you a member of a group or community body that might be interested? Please share with them too.

Everyone enjoyed the Kaimhill Kid’s visit yesterday – especially the resident big kids!
Yesterday was perhaps our busiest day ever on Garthdee Field. Proof of the pudding perhaps, that our Active Community Engagement initiative (ACE) is beginning to bear fruit.
We were delighted to host groups from Santander and Momentum Skills as well as our regulars, Mike and Gordon from the Volunteer Squad, with Penny-Louise on hand taking photos. As icing on the cake we had Carol Baxter and a film and drone crew from Beechgrove Garden working on Sophie’s Plot.
The Santander group were on a team-building corporate sponsorship day with staff drawn from far and wide – from Thurso in the North down to Perth in the South. They threw themselves into a special project to renew the paths around the micro-plots and achieved an amazing amount on the day. The Company also paid for many of the materials needed. A huge vote of thanks go to them and the team on the day for all their efforts and to Stephen Bly, Aberdeen City Council’s Community Engagement Officer, who set up the event and helped out with the work.
Momentum Skills were on one of their regular activity days with us and set about a major tidy up of the former MacMillan Plot. Thanks go to Linda and all the gang for their efforts. They are very much appreciated.
The Club 10 Group returned for their first visit of the new season this week.
We had a cracking game of football just to warm us up for the serious business of soil preparation and seed sowing in the raised beds. the group will be back over the summer and at the end of the season to harvest their crops.
