Community Sunday IYN Extra Session

We have our It’s Your Neighbourhood Competition assessment visit on August 18.  All GFAA members are invited along on the day to meet with our assessors.  We are hoping for a record turnout of plotters.  Please come along if you can manage.

We have a power of work to do to have the site ship-shape for the visit and so we plan to have an extra Community Sunday session this coming Sunday – August 14 at 11.00 – 12.30.  As usual it will be all hands to the wheel with good company to get things done and then a coffee and cake session at the Bothy to celebrate a job well done.

Sunday Post!

Please come along and help if you can spare the time.

I came across Sandy about to head home with this splendid cauliflower.

As I said to him, he is going to need a lot more cheese to go with this one!

Frank Laird

Sadly our longest serving plotter Frank Laird passed away on Tuesday 19th July. Frank started at Garthdee allotments in 1968 on Plot 26. Frank was well respected at the allotment and always had a friendly greeting for other plotters. As you might guess he accumulated a lot of helpful information regarding growing vegetables which he readily shared with other plotters. Our sympathies go to his wife Peggy and family.

The Allotment Market Stall 2016

TAMS is now open for business for the new season!  In case you have forgotten, TAMS – The Allotment Market Stall – is a charity that collects surplus produce from allotment sites and sells them at stalls in and around the city, returning any profit to the providing allotment associations.  Last year we made well over £100 for our funds via TAMS.

TAMS collects from our site on Thursday of each week.  If you would like to donate please leave your contributions in the containers provided outside the Bothy by Thursday lunchtime.  If you can’t get down to your plot at that time, let Norman or me know and we will collect the materials for you and pass them on. Please be specific as to what we should take.

Tip!  Apparently rhubarb is a big seller.  Perhaps you have some going spare?  Let us know and we will collect and pass it on for you.

IYN Preparation 2016

Stuart2016 marks GFAA’s third year in the It’s Your Neighbourhood Scheme. We achieved a Thriving assessment at our first go and now we have an Outstanding ranking to defend in 2016 after our success last year.  Outstanding is the highest award possible. Taking part in IYN has been a source of good advice on growing, the environment and building a better community, but just as importantly, it has helped us open doors to getting more external funding for our site and facilities.

This last month Norman and I took part in a workshop to help us prepare for this year’s assessment.  It’s an important year as 2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of Britain in Bloom.  The workshop was hosted jointly by IYN, The Royal Horticultural Society and Aberdeen City Council.

Some of the key messages for our preparation included:

  • keeping in touch and seeking advice
  • using online resources from IYN and RHS
  • using print and digital comms to get our message across
  • have a vision of where we want to go
  • marking the 50th Anniversary in some way
  • building partnerships with others
  • seeking Council officer and elected member involvement
  • celebrate our successes and good news stories locally and nationally
  • get all ages involved
  • use the council media office to help with the press
  • think about sustainability and long term vitality
  • don’t stand still and get stuck in ruts.

So, we have lots to get on with then!  I and any of the committee members will welcome all suggestions and discussions about our key developments and plans for the future – and of course help to prepare our site for the upcoming IYN Assessment visit.
