Plotters, volunteers and friends can find copies of the new Dobies Catalogue along with an introductory letter and our special GFAA discount code in the Octagon.

The rules are still the same – use the discount code when you order by phone, post or online and you will get a 40% discount on seeds and 10% on everything else. In addition, GFAA receive a 10% bonus for our funds on all orders placed with our code. A Win-Win for sure!

Congratulations!

GFAA were delighted to receive this email from Steven Shaw of Aberdeen City Council.

We had some great news yesterday from the Beautiful Scotland Awards. We’re winners!

I’m chuffed to bits for everyone involved in our campaign. Thank you for all your help and support. Your film showcasing your group worked a treat and our success is very much yours to enjoy too. You can be very proud of helping the city achieve these awards.

Gold Medal for the city but more significantly we also won the Wright Award for Sustainability. This is for our work on wetlands, woodlands and wildlife. This is great news and does show we are on the right track with our more natural approach to the management of some of our green spaces.

Thank you again for all the help you give to our campaign. It means so much to the team and I to have your continued support. We’ve obviously had s a demanding and challenging 18 months so this is lovely recognition for everyone’s hard work.

I’m looking forward to working with you further and enjoying more success in 2022.

Thank you

Steven

Sketchers come calling

It was a great pleasure to have the local Sketchers’ group on site yesterday. Such wonderful talents!

Missing Pendant

Jim (Plot 65B) has been in touch with this distressing message:

My wife Lorraine and myself were at our allotment 65B on Sunday the 25th of July and she realised later that her her pendant was missing – it’s a gold shaped L with sentimental value. It is really small and we looked in our allotment and the top car park but could not see it.

If any one happens to find it and hands it in can you please let us know.

Please be on the lookout around the site.

Community Sunday Returns

It was a great pleasure to see so many plotters, volunteers and friends turn out for our first Community Sunday in such a long time. Thanks go to all who found the time to come along and help out on the day. We counted well north of twenty helpers.

Of course, it was not all coffee and cake and much work was completed around the site before the serious business of catching up with old and new friends began. I don’t think our site has ever looked better.

Thanks too go to Ron for his efforts selling our new range of planters, built by our volunteers. Sales and orders on the day netted over £50 for Association funds. A great effort all round. Further details of the planters available can be found in our new Online Catalogue. We are still accepting orders and some items are still in stock.

All in all we had a wonderful day and warm thanks go to everyone who helped get the new season of Community Sundays off to such a great start.

GFAA CCAF Benefits

Following our successful application for funding from the Community Climate Asset Fund (CCAF), we have been able to purchase a small wood chipping machine and ten rainwater storage tanks.

The wood-chipping machine has so far proved useful in our community garden where the prunings from the orchard have been converted into wood-chip. It’s a dinky little machine and will only accept single stalk branches with a diameter no more than two inches.

A number of our Volunteers have been trained in its use and have agreed to process suitable materials throughout the year ahead. This will reduce the amount of brush material we have to burnin site.

All ten rainwater tanks have been allocated to various plots on site with some being used to collect water from sheds or greenhouses and others just free-standing with an open collector arrangement using polythene sheet to capture the rainwater as the pictures show.

If further funding opportunities arise we would hope to acquire more rainwater tanks to meet demand
