IYN Report 2022

Following a recent visit from Jim and Wendy Henderson, GFAA has received our It’s Your Neighbourhood assessment report for 2022. We are pleased to report we have retained our Outstanding rating. These are extracts from the final report.

New Arrival

We took delivery of our Wheelchair-friendly Picnic Table this Tuesday.

We weren’t expecting it to come flat-packed and the team’s first attempt to assemble it lead to consternation amongst the volunteers and cries of, “Should have gone to IKEA.”

Not quite what we expected

However, the team soon rose to the occasion and had it all sorted out.

All’s well that ends well

The table and bench set is entirely made from recycled plastics and is designed to facilitate use by two wheelchair users and and group of six. It will certainly be a great community asset for many years to come.

Duthie Park Celebration

Representatives of Aberdeen City’s six Green Flag sites today attended an event to celebrate The Duthie Park being awarded with their tenth annual Green Flag Award. Yes, they have achieved Ten in a Row.

Garthdee Field’s third annual inspection visit is scheduled for Tuesday August 16 at 9.30 in the morning. Please put this date in your diaries if you will be able to come along. The Judges very much look forward to chatting with plotters, friends and volunteers during their visits. They will want to know and see:

  • How welcoming our site is
  • How well maintained it is
  • How we encourage biodiversity and green gardening
  • How sustainable our approaches and practices are.

Of course, we hope to have our site in the best possible shape for the visit to ensure we retain our Green Flag status and recognition as a well run public green space. All help to tidy up on and around plots will be much appreciated. If you would like to help on the communal areas please see a member of the Committee for suggestions.

Community Sunday Thanks

It was a great pleasure to see so many old and new faces at our first Community Sunday in a while. Thanks to everyone who managed to come along.

Aberdeen Family Wellbeing Service

Friday 22nd July was a special day at Garthdee Field when we hosted a visit from Katie Reekie of the Aberdeen Family Wellbeing Service and two families from her group along with support from Lucy at Community Food Initiative North East (CFINE).

Katie has started a new role as a Project Worker with Children 1st which is the working name of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSPCC). and is developing a community gardening project based in Balgownie.

The project will support children and families to grow their own fruit and vegetables as well as providing opportunities to engage in creative activities to make the garden a welcoming space for everyone.

Accompanied by Anne and Jordi from our Volunteer Group, the families explored our site tasting some summer fruits, visiting the wildlife pond and the polytunnel. At the end of the site tour soft drinks and snacks were supplied by Katie and the young children had a good run-about on the grass playing “Tig” with any willing adults! (There was no escape!)

With paper and coloured pens the children drew pictures of their visit while Katie held a short focus group noting the thoughts and views of the parents.

It really was a good fun session.

Bonfire Reminder

Our annual bonfire will take place on Saturday 26 March starting at 9am. Come along and help feed the stuff for burning onto the fire.

Make sure you take this opportunity to get rid if any scrap or rotting timber, branches, prunings etc and help keep our allotment tidy and free from rubbish.

If you’re wearing nylon clothing beware of sparks melting small holes in the material – best to wear old clothes.

Girls just want to have fun

We might even manage to have coffee tea and cookies available for the helpers.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the bonfire.

Stuart
