Wasps – more loveable than we think

Val (Plot 23) lead us into an interesting discussion at our General Meeting today. It seems that wasps are much maligned and far from the out and out baddies that some suggest. You can read something of the case for the defence via this link.

Storm Damage

Thanks go to Val (Plot 23) for suggesting this post and providing the photos.

I was just thinking it might be timely to alert all allotmenteers to the potential power of the wind at this time of year and ask them to check their structures are secured and anchored.

It was certainly a shame to see so much damage done around our site after the recent gales – fences down, greenhouse glass blown out, compost bins scattered and poly tunnels uprooted.

Time to batten down the hatches! Thanks also go to Stewart (Plot 59) for taking the time on Sunday morning to replace and secure many vulnerable items and structures against the worst of the winds.

All About Allotments

Stuart recently tipped me off about a website called All About Allotments. It is an extensive site offering all sorts of general advice and information on having and running an allotment and offers a “gateway” into many other sites about green growing with a special focus on the UK.

Hopefully, the weather will improve soon and we will be able to get back to working our plots with safe conditions underfoot, but in the meantime, All About Allotments is well worth exploring.

Losses from Plots

We have suffered from a wee spate of thefts from plots over this season – rather more than for many years. Items taken include: tools, bird feeders, a bicycle, compost bins, hoops and coverings, hoses, produce, etc.

So, a word to the wise, please be aware the problem seems to be ongoing and therefore it is worth taking a bit more care. Also, if you do lose something, please:

  • let a member of the committee know so we can monitor the scale of the problem
  • inform the Police in the case of a break-in and theft
  • as I say, take additional measures to take care of what you can.

If you have practical ideas that would enhance our site security we would be delighted to have them.

Coffee Grounds Anyone?

We have very kindly been offered spent coffee-grounds from one of Aberdeen’s baristas. A quick internet check reveals that there are differing views on how useful coffee grounds are in a garden.

However the grounds certainly have some uses and are being delivered free of charge to our site. You will find a small pile accumulating at the bottom of our allotment site beside where George dumps the grass cuttings. Please help yourself.

NEW: TAMS Veg Boxes

The Allotment Market Stall team have been in touch to announce their new weekly veg box scheme.
